I am changing things this week because there is so much going on, so I am going to be doing two episodes this week. Today, I want to focus on Hamas’s cowardly attack on Israel and the geopolitical implications of this war. Tomorrow, I will focus on Speaker McCarthy’s ouster, the revelation that the FBI is targeting Trump supporters, and Hillary Clinton’s comments regarding Trump supporters.
So you are getting three episodes this week. My interview with Dinesh, which if you haven’t yet listened to, I suggest you do because it was a great discussion. The attack on Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian War, as well as the political landscape here in America.
Attack on Israel and a Failure of American Leadership
For the first time in 50 years, Israel declared war following the terror attacks. There are many different levels to this, and the potential geopolitical implications are huge.
Understand, this is not the routine Israeli-Palestinian conflict that heats up for a little and then subsides. It seems this is much different.
For the last few years, I have been warning about the growing instability in the international arena. In order to truly understand what’s happening right now, it’s important that as a political scientist who teaches international relations, we use the Levels of Analysis. Even more important is that the levels allow us to try and predict what may happen because this is one of those conflicts that can quickly spiral out of control.
Using system-level analysis, something happens and the world reacts. In this case, it’s two-fold. One is the attack where every country is going to react in some way, and the other is in direct relation to the United States. As our power and influence have declined over the years, instability on the world stage has increased. You have to look at how power is distributed throughout the world, and how conflicts are much more likely to occur as power shifts. During these transitions, nation-states and others will take bigger risks. Right now, the world is devoid of leadership and this has been a feckless administration since Biden’s first day in office.
Since he took office, but more specifically since the debacle of the Afghanistan withdrawal, look at the international landscape. Do you feel safer today? Does the world seem more secure? Do more countries around the world fear and respect us? Or is it the exact opposite?
Think about it. The world watched as we were at war for 20 years, spent trillions of dollars, tens of thousands of soldiers came home with life-altering injuries, over 2,400 troops came home in flag-draped coffins, and thousands of contractors died, and what happened? The Taliban was able to recapture the country in less than a week.
The Afghan security forces, which General Milley was in charge of overseeing their training at one point, collapsed and the Afghan government fled despite that we were told for over 20 years that we were making progress. We didn’t even fully leave before the Taliban took over, and then we had to threaten them to get our forces out.
And today, the Taliban is better armed and equipped today than the pre-9/11 invasion. The Biden administration has provided Afghanistan with over $2 billion of taxpayer dollars since the Taliban took over, and he unfroze another $3.5 billion of Afghani dollars. Now, the Biden administration will claim that the money is flowing to the NGOs providing aid to the Afghani people, and it’s not meant for the Taliban, but let’s be honest, the Taliban controls the areas where the NGO’s are operating, and there is little doubt that they will get their hands on some of this money.
China now controls Bagram Air Base which we built to the tune of $96 million taxpayer dollars. And I am not arguing that we should have stayed in Afghanistan, but we certainly could have had a more competent withdrawal. We could have withdrawn using Bagram Air Base, and still manned the base even when we withdrew to provide air support to the Afghan security forces.
Is it any wonder why the world has become destabilized? You have Russia invading Ukraine which was largely predictable. In fact, I did an episode on it in March of 2021, nearly a year before the invasion. You have a much more aggressive Communist China, not just towards Taiwan, but throughout the Pacific, including the Philippines and Vietnam.
And just last month, we see conflict heating up between Azerbaijan and Armenia. We’re witnessing things heat up between Serbia and Kosovo. And now, the horrific terror attacks by Hamas on Israel. Pay attention to this conflict because it has all the potential to spiral out of control. I will explain it all when we get back from this quick break.
