Episode 100 Show Notes- Political Analysis: Democratic National Convention
Episode Description
Professor Nicholas Giordano provides an analysis of this year’s Democratic National Convention. Now that the convention is over, how did it measure up? Did the virtual Zoom like convention work? Did the Democrats keep in line with the Convention’s theme of unity? Did Presidential nominee Joe Biden deliver? Since the activist news media fails to provide any real analysis, Professor Giordano will provide an in-depth examination of the Convention. He will also discuss what the Republicans should do differently at their Convention, as well as what President Trump should focus on in his speech.

Intro
Welcome everyone to another episode of The PAS Report Podcast. Nick Giordano here bringing you another great episode.
This is the 100th episode of The P.A.S. Report podcast. I can’t believe that we hit the hundred-episode mark. Even more impressive is the audience growth, and I only have you, the listener, to thank for that. I can’t begin to explain how much I appreciate the listeners, and how awesome you are for sharing and recommending this podcast to others. Many people reach out to me through email, and I love reading your feedback and answering questions. You can always reach me at podcast@pasreport.com, and I do my best to get back to every listener out there.
With that being said, I am switching it up for the next two weeks. Usually, on Monday’s, I bring in a guest who brings value to the audience. However, since the Democrat convention ended on Thursday and the republican Convention kicks off tonight, for the next two weeks, I will provide analysis on Monday’s and interviews will be released on Wednesdays.
For this episode, I’m going to focus on the Democratic Convention. How did it measure up? Did the virtual Zoom like convention work? Did the Democrats keep in line with the Convention’s theme of unity? Did Presidential nominee Joe Biden deliver?
I don’t want the analysis being stale and so it’s important we go through it.
I will also provide advice and strategies on what the Republicans need to do differently at their convention, as well as how President Trump should approach the Convention and his speech.
Before I jump in, go to The P.A.S. Report website and sign up for the newsletter.
Democratic Convention Kick-Off
Now getting to the Democratic Convention and summing it up in under a minute, take a listen.
Play Crazy Person Screaming
I’m just joking. That was some loser screaming No during President Trump’s inauguration. The little snowflakes out there couldn’t handle it, but it’s not that far off base from what we heard.
Virtual Convention
Before I get into the actual speeches, here are a few observations about the overall optics.
In the coronavirus era, it was certainly an unusual convention since the Democrats chose to go nearly all virtual and it simply didn’t work. Now it’s not the fault of the Democrat’s. We are in unusual times and never had a convention during a pandemic. The Zoom-like feel hurt the Convention. I missed the pomp and circumstance. The excitement of the crowds. The roaring ovations. The crazy outfits.
It simply didn’t feel like a party atmosphere. It didn’t have the celebratory feel to it like previous conventions, and it shows that it is much more difficult to create electrifying moments and excitement without those sorts of things.
The backdrops and added effects were simply cheesy, and some are comparing the Convention to a cheaply produced infomercial, and I think those comparisons are appropriate.
And that makes it even more strange. Considering that most of Hollywood are Democrat, you would think they could have done better with the production value. It shows how little creativity Hollywood has.
Senator Kamala Harris & Joe Biden’s Awkward Moment
Continuing with the optics, one of the most awkward moments came after Senator Kamala Harris’s speech. When she was finished with her speech, Joe Biden came out, and the two never embraced each other. Not a handshake or a hug. Instead, they socially distanced and did an air hug. This created such an awkward moment and cringeworthy to watch.
The optics didn’t work and why they didn’t embrace is beyond me. We get it. We are in the age of coronavirus. We get it, Democrats are simply doing everything opposite of what the President does.
But people aren’t stupid. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris get tested for COVID daily. People who come in contact with them get tested daily. So, there was no reason they shouldn’t have embraced. Also, their spouses walked out together. It just simply didn’t work.
Waving at Computer Monitors
Also, the waving at computer monitors didn’t work and seemed a bit silly. Maybe it’s me, but the lack of human to human connection was off-putting. I am someone who constantly warns that we lose a piece of our humanity the more communication changes from human-human, to human to machine to human. Once again, I get that Democrats are put in a difficult position, especially given their rhetoric on the coronavirus, but the feel of the convention lost a lot because of the technology and that’s probably why viewership was down significantly. While streaming was up. Overall viewership declined anywhere from 10-30% depending on the source you read.
The Daytime Committees
Moving on from the optics, let’s take a look at the convention, and I want to start by looking at the little-watched convention caucuses and what some of the delegates were saying. Thankfully for the Democrat party, hardly anyone watches these meetings, and trust me, these meetings were bizarre.
The mainstream media outlets completely ignored what was being said in these committees. Now I rarely bring up the caucus meetings during the convention because they are mostly inconsequential. However, watching some of these people and the meetings during the Democratic National Convention shows just how radical the party is becoming.
While the overall DNC, wanted to focus on the idea of unity, and present Biden and Harris as moderates, the delegates tell a different story. Take a listen.
Play Clip 2- DNC Pledge
You can rise or kneel whatever your preference. So, if you feel the United States is a horrible country, please kneel. It would have been interesting if this was a live event like previous conventions. Can you imagine what it would look like in the convention hall if half or more of the delegates kneeled during the pledge and national anthem? Maybe the Democrats were better off that this part was virtual.
Also, I take issue with the whole idea of liberty and justice for all someday. That’s a smart-ass remark. You know me here at The P.A.S. Report. I never shy away from America’s past sins. However, I always point out what a great nation we are that has grown, evolved, and improved over time. We are one of the most just countries the world has ever seen, and we place a high value on the concept of liberty, at least we used to.
I am getting sick and tired of people constantly denigrating the United States.
Here’s another clip of the Pledge during the Muslim delegate meeting at the Convention
Play Clip 2- Muslim Delegate Meeting Pledge
You notice how under God was omitted from the pledge. Now the press has come out and said, the DNC never omitted under God from the pledge, but what they won’t say is that it was omitted during some of the caucus meetings.
Play Clip 3- Never Felt American
Never felt American and doesn’t even care to know the pledge of allegiance. This person feels as if this isn’t their country. Perhaps they should take the time to learn about America, and maybe, just maybe, we will start to see people appreciate the United States and what it stands for. I’m telling you; I really like my idea that to graduate from high school, every student should have to go to a 3rd world country for two months to see what the world is really like. These people are clueless.
But I’m not done yet. Because the activist news media provides cover for the Democrats and portrays the Biden Harris ticket as a moderate centrist ticket, take a listen to this clip.
Play Clip 4- Abolish Police, ICE & Prisons
This was at a caucus meeting where they discuss policy. You didn’t hear the word reform; you heard the word abolish. Now someone can easily argue that this is one delegate expressing their opinion. Fair enough but understand that this was the topic of the panel discussion, and these positions are anything but moderate.
But shouldn’t it be incumbent on the DNC and the elected Democrat officials to state what they believe and put it one record without any nuance? Shouldn’t the media ask the Democrats, as well as Biden and Harris if they agree with the caucus?
But wait, there’s more.
Play Clip 5- Transgender in Sports
You hear that this caucus meeting is to discuss biases against those who are transgender, particularly those that are pushing back against the idea that boys, who identify as girls, should be able to compete in girls’ sports. They want you to shut up, and accept the idea that boys, who identify as girls, should be able to compete in girls’ sports.
Now the leftist continually tag Republicans as the party that rejects science. Once again irony and leftist logic. Simple biology says boys and girls are different. Science tells us that men are bigger and stronger. If you are rejecting that notion, you are rejecting simple science and the very basics of biology, but the leftist logic doesn’t allow them to see the irony in that.
And here’s the most dangerous gem, and something that I have been focusing on a lot, and that’s the left’s infatuation with capitalism and the free market system to usher in their socialist vision.
Play Clip 6- Abolish Capitalism
Once again, you didn’t hear the word reform. I think everyone would agree that while capitalism is the best economic system, it can be reformed to better protect individuals. However, this idiot is calling for the destruction of capitalism and the focus of the caucus meeting.
Now, I have no idea what this moron meant when she called for the destruction of colonization and she never elaborated during the meeting, but is she suggesting that we give up America and return the land to Native Americans? As far as white supremacy goes, we did destroy it. White supremacist groups have been marginalized over recent decades.
Now once again, I recognize that these are just some Democrat voices, and they don’t represent the entire Democrat party, but it’s fair to ask, how much of the Democrat party agrees with these clips I just put on, and it would be nice if we had a media that called these people out and asked the politicians whether they support these policy positions. Once again, I use their own words and let them speak for themselves.
It’s amazing that whenever a Republican says something dumb or that’s on the fringes, the media and Democrats try to portray all Republicans as fringe radicals, and Republicans have to immediately come out and condemn the messaging. Yet, Democrats get a pass.
Overall Theme
Now I want to move on to the overall theme of the Democratic National Convention. The theme of the convention was unity and bringing Americans together. The theme was largely based on hope and optimism. So how did the Convention match up to its theme?
Overall, between the committee meetings and the speeches, the Democrats did not do anything to portray hope and optimism. The messaging was extremely dark and the outlook for America is extremely bleak. According to the speeches, American democracy is dying. How’s this for unity, hope, and optimism, take a listen.
Play Clip 7- Unity Clip
I could have let that go on and on, but then you would just be listening to all four nights of the convention. The democrats spent way too much time attacking the President and I think that was a big mistake. It is the 2016 playbook all over again. I get that they want to put President Trump’s character on the ballot, but the problem is that everyone knows who President Trump is.
President Trump has been in the spotlight for the last 40 years, and it’s not like he hides his who he is. His shortcomings are well-known, and not a single person voted for President Trump based on his moral compass. They acknowledge that he is imperfect.
They would have been better served by ignoring the President and laying out their vision for America. That probably would have gotten under the president’s skin more than anything else. President Trump loves the counterpunch and they play right into his hands. It’s clear that they still don’t know how to campaign against the president.
Instead, it was constant attacks on President Trump, and by extension, his supporters. While the theme of the Convention was unity, not a single speaker put out an olive branch or showed any interest in unifying the nation.
You know, Michelle Obama is still touting her, “When they go low, we go high,” remark. Take a listen.
Play Clip 8- Michelle Obama We Go High
The Convention was anything but going high. It was nothing more than constant attacks on the President. But it’s worse than that. There were constant attacks on America as a whole. Take a listen.
Play Clip 9- Racist Montage
How is that a unifying message? How is that going high? The overwhelming majority of Americans stand against racism. They stand against discrimination, but nearly every speaker had no problems labeling America an inherently racist country, and by extension, every American is a racist.
Rather than acknowledge how far the United States has come when it comes to racism and discrimination, they made it as if we are living through slavery and Jim Crow eras. Rather than acknowledge that improvements still need to be made when it comes to race relations, they continually pit us against one another based on race and identity. They continually divide us.
And then Senator Kamala Harris says one of the most disgusting things I have ever heard. She compares racism to an epidemic. To a virus that infects us all. Take a listen.
Play Clip 10- Harris No Vaccine Remark
You have to understand that when they say structural racism and systemic racism, they are saying that all our institutions are racist and were built with racist intent. Once again, how is this exactly a unifying message? Once again, they are playing off division, not unification. They are playing off fear, not love.
Now if I take what the Democrats are saying as true, how come President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden didn’t do anything in the eight years they were president and VP? They must have certainly been aware of how racist we are as a country, yet they chose to do nothing then. And I can broaden that question out to the entire Democrat party.
And this wasn’t just the message of one of the speakers, it was the message of all of the speakers including Joe Biden. Take a listen.
Play Clip 11- Biden Charlottesville
So, Joe Biden brings up an extremely difficult and painful thing that happened in the United States, where sadly a young girl was killed by a white supremacist when she was hit by a car, and Joe Biden brings it up in his speech and completely lies about President Trump’s response. How the hell is this a unifying speech?
I was disgusted when Biden did this because the only reason to bring this up and mischaracterize the President’s statement is to divide and foster hate. Joe Biden is stoking racial tensions. This is extremely dangerous especially given everything that’s currently going on. I mean we are a powder keg right now, and the slightest thing can make the situation get a hell of a lot worse. Yet, Biden had no problems to lie and divide us further.
And for those of you who continue to say that President Trump didn’t condemn white supremacists, here you go. Here is what he said a day or two after Charlottesville.
Play Clip 12- Trump Condemns White Supremacist
When people criticize President Trump for lying, they should hold Biden to the same standard, and the fact that not one media outlet called Biden out shows how biased they are. Biden portrays himself as a man of integrity. He wanted his speech to contrast his demeanor to the Presidents. Well, by using Charlottesville to foster division, and outright lying, what does that say about his character and integrity. And if that isn’t enough for you, here are a few more times that President Trump condemned white supremacy.
Here are a couple more clips for you.
Play Clips 13 & 14
And you can find plenty more clips like this by just doing a little research.
Biden’s Speech
As far as Joe Biden’s speech, He did what he needed to do. He read from a teleprompter, didn’t have any gaffes, and he delivered it well.
The bar was low, and Biden beat expectations. But it didn’t matter too much because the press was ready to praise Biden no matter what he said. Just listen to Van Jones on CNN.
Play Clip 15- Van Jones
At least Van Jones is being honest. Now to the casual observer, Biden’s speech was fine on the surface. But I am someone who picks apart speeches. It’s part of my job and what I get paid to do. There were numerous contradictions in Joe Biden’s speech. He talks about the darkness of America, and like the other speeches, he talks about America as being a racist country. Yet, at the same time, he talks about the greatness of America. Well, if America was built on the concept of racism and systemic racism still exists, how can America possibly be great?
Another contradiction was that Biden continually talked about unifying America, now I just pointed out how that’s false based on the Charlottesville example. However, there are more examples. If Biden wanted to unify Americans, he would have acknowledged the exploding violence in the cities throughout the country. He would have acknowledged groups like Antifa causing unrest. I don’t expect Biden to call out the Black Lives Matter organization but calling out the violence and Antifa should be pretty easy.
Had he called out the violence and told the perpetrators to knock it off, that would have been unifying, but like every other speech before his and throughout the entire Convention, no one acknowledged the violence.
He didn’t focus too much on policy, and I actually understand. If he gave a purely policy speech, it would have been boring and fell flat. But another reason he didn’t focus on policy, is because his presidential platform is too radical. It’s far to the left, so the less about policy the better. Also, if you look at the policies, they are far more dividing than Democrats want you to believe.
The purpose of the speech was to make President Trump’s character and personality. Now I think that tactic is a mistake as I stated before because President Trump is a known quantity, but I understand the logic behind it.
I also didn’t like it when Joe Biden brought up the death of his first wife and his son. While I couldn’t begin to imagine what he went through, it made me feel uncomfortable, and he doesn’t want to make it like he is using these deaths to get into office. It’s totally appropriate for Jill Biden to bring up and for others to bring up, but to me, I feel it can be taken the wrong way.
But overall, the speech was very dark and portrayed America as a very dark country. He should have focused much more on optimism. He should have focused on American accomplishments, and how Americans always rise to the occasion when called upon. He should have ignored President Trump and gave real examples of how he is willing to extend an olive branch to Republicans, independents, and even moderate Democrats. While he said America is a nation that constantly progresses, the speech was ultimately dark and grim.
Irony
As far as the convention itself, there was no shortage of irony, and of course leftist logic never sees the irony. Here you have a former President in Obama, and a former Vice President in Joe Biden stating that we have all these longstanding unresolved issues in the country. Yet, they were in power for 8 years, how come they never did anything about these issues? How come they didn’t point to any concrete accomplishments on these issues during their term in office?
If Joe Biden has the answers on how to solve the problems, why did he keep it a secret for the 8 years they were in power?
Also, what I found astonishing is that Joe Biden is calling for this to be a change election. That we must move back to the politics of a pre-Trump era. Well if these problems existed in a pre-Trump era, why would we go back to that?
I also found it very odd that all the speeches were fixated on President Trump, and why Joe Biden is a good guy. Joe Biden has nearly 50-years of public life. Shouldn’t there have been a focus on his accomplishments over the past half-century? I mean a half-century, 50 years, is a long time. Yet, they couldn’t even muster up a list of real accomplishments in that 50-year career. Why would I vote for someone that’s had 50-years in office, but is short of accomplishments?
And the irony goes on. Check this one out from President Obama.
Play Clip 16- President Obama Destroying Democracy
So, President Obama is saying that President Trump is a threat to Democracy. That he has no regard for democracy, and if he wins reelection, democracy will be dead in the United States.
There is so much irony in this, it can’t be understated. First, they have the nerve to call President Trump a threat to the Constitution when you have Democrat governors throughout the country who have shown absolutely no regard for the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. In fact, the New Jersey Governor stated it’s above his paygrade. These governors, particularly Emperor Cuomo, have ruled by decree since March, with little to no input from the legislatures, and zero regard for people’s Constitutional rights.
In previous episodes, I laid out all the Constitutional rights these governors have suspended without any form of due process. So it was odd that President Obama would even say that when governors are acting like mini tyrants.
Another irony here is when…well, instead of me telling you, just take a listen.
Play Clip 17- Biden Mask Mandate
So, they continue to accuse President Trump of being a dictator, but Joe Biden, without any approval from Congress says he will implement a mandate where people would have to wear a mask, including wearing a mask outdoors, for three months. It wouldn’t matter if you had no coronavirus cases in your county, Biden would mandate all Americans to wear masks, bypassing Congress and ignoring state rights. What exactly makes that Constitutional?
Another irony is Hillary Clinton. Take a listen.
Play Clip 18- Hillary Trump Cheats
Wow. Just wow. She hasn’t gotten over the 2016 results. The irony is they all criticize President Trump for not accepting the results of the election, yet it’s clear she still doesn’t accept the results. And I can guarantee you that no matter what happens, they won’t accept the results of the 2020 elections.
But I’ve saved the ultimate irony for last, and that’s Emperor Cuomo. Take a listen
Play Clip 19- Emperor Cuomo
Emperor Cuomo has some nerve. The fact that he criticizes the federal government over coronavirus when every little thing he requested was fulfilled by the federal government, is crazy. Also, the emperor has the nerve to criticize anyone when it comes to coronavirus when his March 25th nursing home order led to so many New Yorkers losing their lives. And this idiot is calling it the European virus to counter President Trump’s China virus label. Well, how the hell did it get to Europe? It’s truly pathetic.
And now this pathetic loser is writing a book about the Coronavirus response, and I will guarantee he will take zero responsibility for his Nursing Home order. And he has yet to be called out by the press for trying to make a profit during an epidemic in which over 170K Americans lost their lives. Imagine what the press would do if President Trump wrote a book to be released in October about the coronavirus. They would be screaming that the President is exploiting the deaths and trying to profit. But the emperor gets a pass.

In any event, that’s the Democratic National Convention in a nutshell. As for the Republicans, I hope they were taking notes on what not to do. They need to make it livelier than a Zoom virtual meeting. They need to figure out a way to get the bodies there, perhaps do it all outdoors.
You don’t need thousands of people, but having a crowd there is a big difference. Also, they need to present real optimism and figure out ways on how they are going to bring Americans together.
President Trump needs to strike an optimistic tone. Throughout the 4-night convention, President Trump’s accomplishments need to be front and center. They need to talk about how they killed Hamza bin Laden. How they killed al-Baghdadi and hampered ISIS’s capabilities. How they took out Soleimani and hurt Iran. They need to highlight that President Trump was able to get 3 or 4 trade deals revised that have better terms for the United States. They need to highlight that European Countries are no putting more money towards NATO than ever before. They need to highlight how we are the number one energy producer in the world. They need to highlight how America’s power has increased under his leadership, and how he has been able to achieve something the last five Presidents were unable to do, and that’s a peace deal between Israel and another Middle Eastern country.
They need to highlight America’s new space program. They need to highlight and explain the opportunity zones. They need to highlight criminal justice reform, and how it’s helping minority communities. They need to highlight how manufacturing is returning to the United States.
Most importantly, President Trump needs to explain the importance of law and order and highlight the importance of liberty. Highlight the importance of adhering to the constitution and letting states mostly govern themselves. He also needs to lay out a vision of what the next four years will look like and it has to be based on optimism.
So, it’s going to be interesting to see what the Republican National Convention does differently, and I’ll provide analysis on it next Monday. As for Wednesday, I have a great guest coming in and you won’t want to miss it.
As always, recommend the podcast to others, and post it on all your social media platforms. I thank you for joining us, stay safe and I’ll be back on Wednesday with another great episode.
