Are the American people in the midst of a war without even knowing? When war comes to mind, most of us think of war, we think of the traditional battlefields. Conventional military forces marching under the banner of a nation-state. We think of wars over territory, resources, an attempt to restore justice or maybe you think of terrorist organizations like al-Qaeda.

But what if I told you that there is a war currently being waged? A war not being fought on traditional battlefields, but is being fought within the very fabric of our society.

I’m not talking about the culture wars you constantly hear about. I am talking about a concerted effort by those in power to control our thoughts, perceptions, and opinions. The battlefield is our own minds.

Some will say it’s a conspiracy theory. Some will say it’s out of a Tom Clancy novel, but what if it is real? What if this war is happening? What I’m talking about is fifth-generation warfare. Understand, that war has constantly evolved throughout the human experience, and before I explain what fifth-generation warfare is, let’s look at how the nature of war has changed.

Regarding first-generation warfare, think back to the Egyptians, the Greeks, and the Romans. Ancient battles like the Battle of Megiddo, the Battle of Marathon, the Punic Wars, the Battle of Hastings and so many more, where battlefields were away from civilian populations, and line and column formations would dominate the battlefield. Numbers, discipline, and brut physical strength like bows and arrows, spears, swords, axes, and shields, would determine the outcomes.

Fast forward to advancements in firearms, the emergence of the nation-state, and the Industrial Revolution, and you see how second-generation warfare changed the nature of the battlefield. While still linear, second-generation warfare would be more strategic and deadly given the advanced weaponry. Trenches and fortifications. Artillery barrages, and large-scale infantry marching under the banner of the nation-state. Think WWI.

Third-generation warfare emerged with the Second World War. Here you begin to see the buildout of the military-industrial complex. Tanks, aircraft, bombs, and mechanized infantry, are used to achieve strategic mobility. Think of Nazi Germany’s Blitzkrieg tactics in Poland. War would become more organized. They would be mission-oriented with a focus on logistics and more maneuverable and agile forces that can quickly adapt to the changing nature of the battlefield. The size of a military becomes less important as technological advances and strategic thinking play a greater role.

As the 20th century wore on, and technology continued to advance, warfare changed again. Fourth-generation warfare will be less about the nation-state and more about non-state actors using asymmetric tactics as they engage in unconventional tactics – guerilla warfare, urban warfare, and terrorism. Nation-states would fight less against each other and instead use proxy groups to do their bidding. Also, nation-states would look to alternatives like cyber and information warfare. Although information warfare has always existed, through the emergence of the internet, we begin to see it more organized where people are radicalized, and have little loyalty and allegiance to a nation-state, as they adhere more to an ideology. Obviously, groups like al-Qaeda come to mind, and our wars in Afghanistan and Iraq come to mind. Interestingly, when looking at Russia’s war in Ukraine, is a more third-generation and conventional style of warfare, but we still see elements of fourth-generation warfare.

This brings us to fifth-generation warfare. This type of warfare is psychological more than anything else. It relies on societal manipulation. Manipulation of the mind. Instead of fighting with guns and bombs, it’s an attempt to seize control and shape ideas, perceptions, and beliefs. It’s about controlling the flow of information. Manipulating economies. Sowing discord and confusion. Those engaged in fifth-generation warfare use subtle means to destabilize and shape the structures of societies.

Which brings us to the point of this episode. We are currently in the midst of fifth-generation warfare. A war that carries grave implications for our civil liberties, our national security, our governance, and our very way of life. This war goes to the heart of the very essence of our Republic, and when we get back from this quick break, I will explain how it is being employed, who’s behind it, the intent, and what it means for our future.

So, hang tight, and we will be right back.
