Episode Description
On June 3, 1781, a lightning-fast British cavalry raid led by “Bloody Ban” Tarleton raced toward Charlottesville and Monticello with one mission: capture Virginia’s lawmakers and Thomas Jefferson. In this America’s Founding Series episode, Professor Nick Giordano tells the cinematic, largely forgotten story of Jack Jouett, the “Paul Revere of the South,” whose all-night ride through the Virginia backcountry helped save the Revolutionary government from decapitation. You’ll hear how Tarleton’s raid unfolded, why Jefferson’s escape was so close, and the timeless lesson Jouett leaves us about government vs governance and why republics survive only when citizens take responsibility before the system even wakes up.
Episode Highlights:
- Jack Jouett’s midnight ride: the backcountry dash that beat Tarleton’s dragoons to Monticello and Charlottesville
- Tarleton’s raid on Jefferson: what happened at Monticello and why Virginia’s leaders fled to safety

Jack Jouett: The Paul Revere of the South and the Night the British Came for Jefferson
On June 3, 1781, the American Revolution nearly suffered a devastating blow in Virginia. Lieutenant Colonel Banastre “Bloody Ban” Tarleton led an elite British cavalry detachment in a lightning fast raid toward Charlottesville, targeting Virginia’s lawmakers and Thomas Jefferson at nearby Monticello. The goal was simple and ruthless: decapitate the revolutionary leadership in one night, shatter morale, and cripple the Patriot cause. With no scouts and no warning system in place, the “system” failed at the worst possible moment.
That is when a forgotten patriot stepped into history. Jack Jouett Jr., a Virginia militia captain, recognized Tarleton’s movement and understood exactly what was about to happen. With no orders and no official mission, Jouett made a decision that demanded courage and competence. He launched into the dark on a brutal backwoods route to outrun the British dragoons, pushing through rough terrain and dense woods to reach Monticello before dawn. This midnight ride, often called the Paul Revere ride of the South, helped give Jefferson and members of the Virginia legislature the time they needed to escape capture.
Jouett’s warning helped throw Tarleton’s raid into disarray. Jefferson fled, legislators scattered, and while several men were taken, the “big fish” were gone and Virginia’s government survived. Yet the aftermath exposes a timeless truth about government. The same officials who benefited from Jouett’s heroism moved slowly to reward him and quickly to point fingers at each other. It took years for formal recognition to catch up with the man who moved faster than the bureaucracy when the Revolution needed him most.
The modern lesson from Jack Jouett is the difference between government and governance. Government is the structure, the committee, the bureaucracy, and it can be asleep at the exact moment danger arrives. Governance is the citizen’s behavior, the willingness to take responsibility for the outcome before permission is granted and before the system responds. The story of Jack Jouett is a reminder that liberty is protected by citizens who act with civic courage, not by promises from big government. As America approaches the 250th anniversary, the forgotten patriots of the Revolutionary War offer a powerful message: a republic endures only when its people are willing to do what must be done when everything is on the line.
