Media Manipulation in Attempted Maryland School Shooting
Last week, a teenager in Maryland, Alex Ye, was arrested for planning and describing her intentions of a double school shooting in a lengthy manifesto. From Columbine to today, the amount of school shootings in this country has reached an alarming number, particularly in recent years – a tragedy that is becoming embedded in American culture.
The left will scream about gun laws, but they are generally stricter now than they were in 1999, yet we see this surge. In my opinion, these shootings have to do with the focus on oneself, largely because of a decline in faith and the loss of empathy for life. We, as a society, have become so focused on our feelings that we have lost any real connection to others. Video games, isolation from social media, and news outlets have all contributed to this desensitization. This is a complex and detailed conversation, but for this article, I would like to focus on something different.
Alex Ye, a biological female, is an 18-year-old high school student who has a history of mental illness. She has had several involuntary hospital stays, and during her latest, she shared her manifesto with another patient. Ye’s internet search history, pictures she drew, and other texts corroborated her manifesto. She was arrested last Wednesday and charged with threats of mass violence. Thank God, the proper steps were taken, and her dream of mass murder was prevented, but what is infuriating is the reporting on this individual.
To keep an informed public and have a cohesive society that functions properly, we must have an honest and free press – there’s a reason the founding fathers put this in the very first amendment of the Bill of Rights. My readers know this hasn’t been the case for a long time. In this article, I wanted to focus on the shooter, but after researching, my focus shifted to the media coverage of her. The concerted effort to hide or minimize the fact that she is trans is, despite the media’s best efforts, obvious to anyone who digs a little. It is important to point out that they, along with the courts, were certain to use Andrea Ye’s correct pronouns. Thank goodness!
Media Manipulation
An NBC news article made no mention of the essential detail that she was trans. It is kind of an important fact NBC, don’t you think? The fact that she was trans made headlines in only a few conservative media outlets. In some egregious cases, no mention was made of this in the entire coverage, like the NBC article I linked – a perfect illustration of media manipulation. I found this fascinating and disturbing. If you want to prevent tragedies like this, you need to provide the public with all the relevant facts.
It’s disgusting how the media cherry-picks which shootings to delve into and which ones to practically ignore. They are all tragic. Here, the violence was thankfully prevented, but what about the Nashville shooter from last year? Audrey Hale, a trans individual, burst into a Christian school and brutally murdered 3 young children and 3 adults. The 28-year-old woman previously attended this school and specifically targeted it in her murderous rage.
A concerted effort to hide Hale’s manifesto ensued after the tragic killings. Leaked excerpts from her documents show her disdain for individuals she believed had “white privilege,” yet the entire manifesto has still not been released.
Why hide this? Because it did not fit the narrative. Rest assured if it was a White Christian male who committed a mass shooting, these identifying characteristics would be in every single headline and regurgitated ad nauseam, and the manifesto would be meticulously scrutinized. To bolster this point, please watch this short clip of Anne Coulter on Bill Maher’s show. They are discussing the Kansas City Super Bowl Parade shooting. Before the identities of the shooters are released, Coulter asserts that she knows the shooters are not white. At the point of this clip, the identities of the shooters are unknown. Lo and behold, Ann Coulter wound up being correct.
Folks, it’s very simple. The media serves the people. They are our safeguards against a tyrannical government. Their job is to expose those in power, regardless of their political affiliation. This is crucial for the health and existence of our republic. Unfortunately, we are so far removed from this. Right now, we have too many outlets that are simply an extension of the government – that’s called state-run media, and it is in line with the communist Chinese and the authoritarian Russian governments. The media is in dire need of self-reflection – for the dignity of the profession, but more so for the general public. People need to be informed by facts, not fabrications. The people need to demand an honest press that has an unwavering commitment to truth.
