When people think of the Founding Fathers, names like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, and John Adams often come to mind. But there is one man whose influence shaped every stage of America’s founding, yet his name is rarely mentioned. That man is Roger Sherman.
The Only Founder Who Signed All Four Founding Documents, including America’s Constitution
Roger Sherman holds a distinction that sets him apart from every other Founding Father. He is the only individual to sign all four of the key documents that established the United States of America:
The Continental Association
The Declaration of Independence
The Articles of Confederation
The United States Constitution
From the earliest acts of colonial resistance to the final framework of American government, Sherman was there. His involvement was not just symbolic. It was instrumental.
The Great Compromise That Shaped the Nation
During the Constitutional Convention of 1787, deep divisions emerged between large and small states. Larger states wanted representation based on population. Smaller states demanded equal power. With the entire process at risk of collapsing, it was Roger Sherman who offered the solution.
Sherman proposed what became known as the Great Compromise. His idea created a bicameral legislature, with a House of Representatives based on population and a Senate that gave each state equal representation. This structure not only saved the Constitution, it provided the balance that still defines American government today.
A Voice for Liberty and Conscience
Sherman’s contributions went beyond political negotiation. In his home state of Connecticut, he helped draft one of the earliest legal protections for religious liberty. He believed government had no right to interfere with matters of conscience. Sherman also opposed efforts by southern states to count enslaved people as full persons for representation in Congress, which would have given slaveholding states more political power.
Sherman was not driven by personal ambition. He was guided by principle, faith, and a strong belief in the rights of individuals. His quiet leadership helped hold the founding together at a time when it could have easily fallen apart.
