Benjamin Rush: The Revolutionary Who Prescribed Liberty
Most Americans can name a few key Founding Fathers like Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, and Adams. But few realize that one of the most remarkable minds behind the American Revolution was a physician who signed the Declaration of Independence with a pen in one hand and, symbolically, a medical scalpel in the other.
This week on The P.A.S. Report Podcast’s America’s Founding Series, we spotlight Benjamin Rush, a true revolutionary whose impact stretched far beyond the battlefield and the halls of government. As a man of science, morality, and principle, Rush helped shape the early American republic in ways that still resonate today.
Rush was more than just a signer of the Declaration. He was one of the first American voices to denounce slavery as a moral evil, publishing anti-slavery writings years before it became a mainstream cause. He co-founded the Pennsylvania Abolition Society and worked closely with Black leaders like Richard Allen, mentoring them and supporting the birth of America’s first independent Black church.
As a physician, Rush became a pioneer in mental health. He refused to treat the mentally ill as criminals, arguing that mental illness was a disease worthy of compassion and scientific treatment. His ideas earned him the title “father of American psychiatry.”
Rush also understood the dangers of political division. He was so disturbed by the growing feud between John Adams and Thomas Jefferson that he made it his personal mission to reconcile them. Thanks to his efforts, the two statesmen resumed their legendary correspondence just years before they both died on July 4, 1826.
Rush’s story is one of relentless reform, fearless moral conviction, and unwavering dedication to a better America. In this episode, Professor Nick Giordano explores the life, ideas, and legacy of Benjamin Rush and why he deserves far more recognition than history has given him.
