Squatters Spark Outrage Across the Nation
Picture it – America – 2024. You’re a law-abiding citizen who regularly pays taxes and contributes to society. You decide to take your family on vacation. Maybe you’ve saved up for an overseas trip. When you return home, you discover strangers in your house. Naturally, you call the police in the hopes they can remove the intruders safely and quickly. You’re probably tired, would like to unpack, and just want to relax before you go back to work the following day. Unfortunately, you live in a world where up is down, down is up, and anything that seems fantastically unfair and outlandish is reality. Not only can the police not help you, but you can be the one to be arrested.
Recently, squatting incidents in New York, Georgia, and other parts of the country have shocked the population, stirring up feelings of anger and disbelief. Adele Andaloro, a 47-year-old woman, who inherited a Queen’s house from her deceased parents, was arrested last week after changing the locks when she found several squatters had invaded her home. That’s correct folks, the homeowner, not the people who have no claim to the home, was arrested. I’ll give you another reason to flee New York City if you haven’t already done so. In this once great city, if you reside in an apartment or house for 30 days or more, you apparently have rights to that residence, as you are considered a legal tenant at that point. It doesn’t matter that you’ve never paid a bill in that house, it doesn’t matter if your name is not on the deed or lease. All that matters is that you have stayed in that residence for at least 30 days. Not only was the NYPD unable to serve and protect Ms. Andaloro, but they actually arrested her. Why? Because she changed the locks.
In NYC, the criminals have more rights than you. This is something New Yorkers have certainly not accepted but have become accustomed to. I’m a big backer of the men and women in blue, particularly of the NYPD, who have an extraordinarily difficult job, but in the words of the nursing home patient currently residing in the White House, C’mon man! Use some damn discretion! Keep in mind, Ms. Andaloro is responsible for all legal fees required to attempt to remove the invaders from her home, which is a costly expense. Oh, and she must continue to pay the property taxes as well!
Last week, a Georgia man, Paul Callins, who was looking to rent a property he owned, also fell victim to squatters. After paying thousands of dollars to fix up the place, squatters broke into his home and immediately changed the locks on the house. As Mr. Callins is caring for his sick wife, 3 squatters rented a U-Haul to move their things into his property. Incredible! The police are unable to help because these intruders have a fake lease. Callins was told that it was a civil matter and now must file court proceedings that can take 3 months to resolve. The only glimmer of hope here is that a new law in DeKalb County, Georgia is being debated that would protect the rights of the homeowner. A similar law is also being proposed in New York that would facilitate the homeowner in removing squatters from their property.
Perhaps, the most egregious story is the case of 52-year-old Nadia Vitel. Last Week, she visited her deceased mother’s Manhattan apartment and discovered a man and woman living there. These squatters allegedly beat Ms. Vitel to death. Her son, having not heard from his mother in 2 days, went to the apartment with other relatives and the superintendent of the building. He tragically found his mother’s body stuffed into a duffel bag hidden in a closet. The alleged criminals escaped by stealing Vitel’s Lexus and fleeing to Pennsylvania, where they were ultimately arrested. Another disturbing part of this case is that keys are required to use the elevator in this building that leads directly to the apartment. Officials are still trying to figure out how the squatters and alleged murderers accessed the residence.
Keep in mind that many of these squatters live in filth, destroy the property they inhabit, use illegal drugs on the premises and so much more. There are thousands of cases like this occurring in our country, and it is despicable. Although it feels like we’re in an episode of the Twilight Zone with all the corruption going on and blatant lies that are told with straight faces from politicians, the media and the elite, this squatting predicament affects us differently because it is so invasive. This is literally the seizure of personal property by the lowest scum of society. At some point, we must return to sanity, where the laws and the system work for those of us who abide by the rules and contribute to society. If we don’t get a handle on issues like this now, chaos and vigilantism will surely ensue.
