It seems like we need a little reminder of who we are as Americans. The coronavirus outbreak has led to an atmosphere of fear and panic. In these trying times, we must not forget that we are Americans. We need to escape the political and ideological divides that imprison us. More importantly, we need to recognize the greatness of our culture. America has been able to overcome many obstacles in our 230+ years history. We have met every challenge and emerged stronger than before. It is imperative we don’t let fear and politics change our way of life. It’s imperative that we don’t give up the very principles that have defined the United States and led to America’s greatness.

When the current coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis passes, America, as a nation, needs to engage in a conversation about what direction we go in. Once we begin to responsibly reopen the country, we need to completely reevaluate the powers of government, the state government’s reliance on the federal government, and most importantly, the purpose of government. Should we really allow chief Executives to rule by decree with little input from the legislative branch? Should we really encourage citizens to rat one another out? Should we really be using surveillance drones to enforce social distancing? As the calls for the Orwellian state grow louder, we must remember the principles that guided us to become the greatest country the world has have witnessed.

How fear is driving us towards a “new normal” and it’s this idea of a new normal that we need to question. Many of us don’t realize how quickly a free country can slide into tyranny.
