Episode Description
In this episode of America’s Founding Series on The P.A.S. Report, Professor Nick Giordano tells the riveting story of Nathaniel Greene, the self-taught military genius who defied his Quaker pacifist upbringing to become one of George Washington’s most trusted and effective generals. Often overshadowed by flashier names, Greene’s Southern Campaign was the quiet turning point of the American Revolution that bled British forces dry, forced Cornwallis to retreat, and set the stage for ultimate victory at Yorktown. Discover how a man of peace became a reluctant warrior, and why his brilliance remains one of the most underappreciated pillars of American independence.

When most people think of heroes from the American Revolution, names like Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin come to mind. But few realize that without the brilliance of Nathaniel Greene, the war may have ended very differently, and not in our favor.
Born into a devout Quaker family in Rhode Island, Greene was raised in a faith that rejected all violence. Pacifism wasn’t just a preference. It was a moral law. And yet, something stirred within him. As the British Crown trampled the rights of the colonists, Greene’s sense of justice grew stronger than his religious constraints.
He studied military strategy in secret. He joined the militia. He was expelled from his Quaker congregation. And when war came, he answered the call, not out of ego or bloodlust, but out of moral duty.
Greene quickly rose through the ranks to become one of George Washington’s most trusted generals. But it was in the South where his genius truly shined. After the humiliating defeat at Camden, Congress turned to Greene to salvage the Southern campaign. What he did next was nothing short of remarkable.
With a shattered army and dwindling resources, Greene avoided direct confrontation and instead waged a strategic war of attrition. He led the British on an exhausting chase across the Carolinas, culminating in the Battle of Guilford Courthouse. Though technically a British victory, the cost was devastating. Cornwallis, worn down and weakened, retreated to Virginia, directly into the trap that would become Yorktown.
Greene never sought fame. In fact, he died young, broke, and largely forgotten. But without him, the dream of American independence might have died in the Southern fields.
