Just a reminder, on Monday, I released my interview with Dr. Victor Davis Hanson. It was a fascinating conversation and if you haven’t had a chance to listen to it just yet, I suggest you do. It was a wide-ranging conversation from the weaponization of government to his new book, The End of Everything. Dr. Hanson offers valuable insights on how to reverse this trajectory, warning that failure to do so could lead us down the path of past civilizations’ demise, as foretold in his latest book.
This goes along with what I discussed last week, and what I would like to discuss today. Last week, I discussed the misplaced priorities of Americans, especially our youth. I explained how they are fighting harder for TikTok than they did as two years of their lives were being stolen from them through authoritarian decrees.
Today, I want to focus on an issue that has reached crisis levels in America – our nation’s mental health. According to a recent Gallup poll, happiness is plummeting across the country, and what’s even more alarming is that this decline is affecting our youngest generations – children, teens, and young adults. These are demographics that should be filled with promise and optimism, yet they’re grappling with unprecedented levels of anxiety, depression, and hopelessness. The question is why?
There are a myriad of reasons, but much of the current mental health crisis can be traced back to a significant shift in our society away from the traditional values that once defined American exceptionalism. Faith, family, merit, and patriotism have been supplanted by a culture that prioritizes radical ideology and government dependency. The void created by the erosion of traditional values has been filled by the leftist agenda. An agenda that pushes activism over personal responsibility and reliance on the government over self-reliance.
The rise of what’s been termed as the ‘woke’ culture has only exacerbated the problem. A new study from Europe has shown a clear link between identifying as ‘woke’ and experiencing higher levels of anxiety, depression, and overall unhappiness. This ‘woke’ mind virus has infiltrated our education system, further fueling the mental health crisis among our youth.
It’s a stark reality that we cannot ignore. Suicide ranks as the second leading cause of death among children ages 10-14 and young adults ages 20-34. Shockingly, over half of young adults under the age of 30 are grappling with anxiety, while nearly half are experiencing depression and feelings of hopelessness.
As a college professor, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact of this crisis. The number of students suffering from mental illness has skyrocketed, and it’s not hard to see why. Our educational institutions have shifted their focus from imparting knowledge to promoting indoctrination and activism. Concepts like Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and the pursuit of social justice have taken precedence over academic rigor and critical thinking.
But it’s not just our education system that’s to blame. Technology plays a significant role as well. While advancements in technology have undoubtedly brought about numerous benefits, they’ve also contributed to a sense of isolation and disconnection among our youth. Social media, in particular, has been linked to increased feelings of anxiety and depression, as young people constantly compare themselves to curated, often unrealistic, portrayals of others’ lives.
The authoritarian response to the pandemic has only worsened the situation. Lockdowns, school closures, and the erosion of personal freedoms have taken a toll on the mental well-being of millions of Americans, particularly our youth, who have been robbed of essential social interactions and experiences.
But despite the bleakness of the current situation, there is hope. By acknowledging the root causes of this crisis and addressing them, we can begin to reverse the tide of despair and hopelessness that has gripped our nation. It starts with a return to the values that made America great – faith, family, merit, and patriotism.
I will explain it all, but first, we need to take a quick break. When we come back, I will dive right in. So don’t go anywhere. We’ll be right back after this.
