Whose Side Is Our Government On – The Criminal or We the People?
Much to the chagrin of many in our government, we have eyes, therefore we can see. The Biden administration constantly insists that crime is on the decline, but those of us who live in cities or areas nearby or who can watch videos know this simply isn’t true. We’ve all witnessed people walking into stores, filling up baskets and walking out without paying. We see needles littering the streets, homelessness, and violence flooding our neighborhoods. I’m reminded of the video of the foolish MSNBC “reporter” claiming that the fires and violence around him during the riots of 2020 were mostly peaceful.
Why do the media and our government refuse to admit the obvious? We can speculate on various reasons for this, but this week I’d like to focus on two cases that demonstrate the disgusting injustice that is occurring on a local and national level.
January 6th is associated with an abundance of dishonesty, deceitfulness, and inequity. A detailed exposé is required to display the depth of injustice associated with that day, but for this article, I’d like to focus on Rebecca Lavrenz, also known as the “J6 Praying Grandma.” Lavrenz is a 71-year-old great-grandma who operated a bed and breakfast in Colorado. Are you shaking in your boots yet? She’s also a religious woman who felt compelled to go to the Capitol building to pray. Uh-Oh. Another fatal mistake. You can’t talk about or even think about God, especially not in a country that was founded on Judeo-Christian values.
So, what was the elderly Lavrenz’s despicable crime? Well, she was found guilty on four misdemeanor charges, including entering a restricted building and parading or picketing in the Capitol. While researching for this article, I was shocked at the number of news outlets that describe Lavrenz as ‘storming’ the Capitol, as if the 71-year-old woman charged the building with torches in hand. It’s ridiculous. Rebecca Lavrenz will be sentenced on August 12th of this year and is facing up to one year in prison and fines that could exceed $200,000. She’s already tens of thousands of dollars in debt due to legal fees, while actual criminals vandalize and terrorize our streets with no punishment. What a repulsive miscarriage of justice. I am going to follow this story and keep you posted on the ultimate outcome.
Another infuriating situation, and more significant to an extent, is the case of Daniel Penny. Last May, Jordan Neely, a homeless man, entered a NYC subway car and began to threaten and intimidate passengers. He was getting in people’s faces, cursing and telling them that he would be willing to go to jail. Frightened passengers began to congregate toward the exit doors. When describing the incident, a witness on the train said, “We were scared for our lives.” Penny, a 24-year-old former marine, sprung into action and put Neely in a chokehold. Two men assisted Penny against the struggling Neely who ultimately died.
Daniel Penny is now facing second-degree manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide charges. He describes being scared for himself and for the women and children around him, so he did what he was trained to do – protect the innocent. None of us can claim to know what was going on inside Penny’s head, but the witness said that he “waited until the last minute to intervene” and said that after the incident Penny was “shaken” and very much distressed.
What’s exasperating about this situation is that the story has been painted in the context of race. If you research the story, you will consistently see Penny referred to as a ‘white man’ and Neely as ‘black.’ Neely is depicted as an upstanding citizen – a kind street performer who died “alone, at the hands of a stranger.” They ignore the fact that Neely had 42 prior arrests, including assault charges. Neely didn’t deserve to die, but the truth doesn’t deserve to be sugar-coated either. The people on the train that day feared for their lives. The witness who refers to Penny as a ‘hero’ was black. The man who helped Penny contain Neely was black, and many of the passengers who were being terrorized by Neely were black, so if you’re going to bring race into this, why are those facts left out?
I think race should be left out of this story completely, as it obviously had no bearing on what Penny did. He felt like he and other passengers were in danger, and he acted on that. Period. Judge him on that alone, but like everything nowadays, race must be a factor. Another problem with this story is that people are going to be less inclined to intervene when they see these sorts of things occurring, and can you blame them? What would you do if you saw someone threatening another person? Well, after this, I can guarantee that a lot of people are going to bury their heads in the sand. This, coupled with the disrespect for law enforcement will inevitably lead to more suffering of innocent people. It is apparent that our government has abandoned ‘We the People.’
