Welcome to The P.A.S. Report Podcast.
Happy Independence Day everyone. I hope you’re enjoying your July 4th celebrations, and hopefully, you play this episode at your barbecues and celebrations because it’s an episode that everyone needs to hear.
No matter what anyone tells you, remember, that America is an exceptional nation. We are the greatest country to ever exist. For the last couple of decades, we’ve seen this push to denigrate everything this country stands for. We’ve seen a push to discredit the founding fathers, and we’ve witnessed the radical attempt to transform the country into something we wouldn’t recognize.
The reason this push exists is that you have a bunch of spoiled brats that know nothing about our great country. People who never took the time to learn our history. People who never had to sacrifice anything for the liberties they’ve been granted. These entitled brats believe they are morally superior and smarter than everyone else.
The problem is that due to a failed education system, one that pushes ideology and indoctrination, too many Americans are unaware of our rich and unique history. A history that exemplifies why America is an exceptional nation.
Since the majority of Americans don’t know our history, false histories have emerged. Lies like the 1619 Project that has no basis in reality.
In this episode, I’m going to talk about why America is an exceptional nation. I’m going to talk about some little-known people that played key roles in our independence and our founding. It will piggyback off my Op-Ed published in The Washington Times. If you haven’t read it, I have the link up at The P.A.S. Report website in the show notes so check it out.
In this episode, I will dispel the myth that America’s founding was at the hands of a bunch of rich, white men that wanted to preserve the institution of slavery.
Perhaps if Americans knew their real history, they would have a greater love and appreciation for the country and our founding. If they knew our real history, they would see why America is an exceptional nation.
That’s what this episode aims to do, but before I get into it, be sure to click the follow button so you never miss an episode and visit The P.A.S. Report website to sign up for my newsletter.
Why We Celebrate July 4th
Imagine a time when most people growing up today are completely unaware of why we celebrate Independence Day. Some believe that it’s due to our victory in WWII. Some say the Civil War. Some say it’s because we won the American Revolution thereby securing our independence.
Too many are ignorant of the fact that we celebrate this day to mark the Declaration of Independence. One of the more interesting parts of our history is that on July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress declared our Independence from Britain.
John Adams believed that July 2nd would become the day we celebrated independence, and he remarked, “I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary Festival. It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more.” (National Archives)
However, July 4th is the day of celebrations because that’s when the Continental Congress approved the final wording of the Declaration of Independence.

Filippo Mazzei and the Italian Contributions to Our Founding
The Declaration of Independence is one of the most important documents not just in American history, but in the history of the world. It’s important to us because it was brilliantly written laying out the core tenets of the American creed. Ultimately, this document is what shapes the American political philosophy and links us all together by defining what it means to be American.
When you think of the Declaration, who is the first person that comes to mind? For most people, it will be Thomas Jefferson given that he was the main author of the Declaration. Some may think of Benjamin Franklin and John Adams who assisted Jefferson, but how many of you are aware of the name Filippo Mazzei?
I’ll bet that most of you never heard that name before which is a shame because contrary to what has been taught in our schools and promoted through the far-left Democrat narrative, there are so many unknown names from a diverse set of backgrounds that shaped our founding, including Filippo Mazzei who played a critical role in our founding.
Mazzei was an Italian merchant who befriended Jefferson. In 1773, he traveled to the United States and quickly took up the cause of independence.
Mazzei and Jefferson loved to discuss and debate politics, and one of the central recurring themes was the question- what constitutes true liberty? The discussion on how to take this idea of true liberty from the theoretical and apply it in the real world.
In 1774, Mazzei wrote an article inserted into the Virginia Gazette, and translated by Jefferson into English. Mazzei wrote, “Tutti gli uomini sono per natura egualmente liberi e indipendenti. Quest’ eguaglianza è neccessaria per costituire un governo libero.”
The translation to English is work “All men are by nature equally free and independent. This equality is necessary in order to create a free government.”
This would end up becoming the central part of the American creed and illustrates Mazzei’s influence on the Declaration as this idea would be incorporated and serve as the basis as to why so many from around the world traveled and settled in the United States in an attempt to achieve their American dream.
What makes this even more remarkable is when you understand the Italian-American experience, you know that Italians weren’t considered white. Contrary to what has been taught, Italians wouldn’t be considered white until the mid to late 20th century. They were rejected by the White community, and they were rejected by the Black community.
It would take nearly 200 years for Congress to recognize Mazzei’s contribution. In 1958, John F. Kennedy recognizes Mazzei’s contribution in his book, A Nation of Immigrants. In 1993, the 103rd Congress passed a Joint Resolution acknowledging Mazzei’s contribution and recognizing him as the patriot he was. (H.J.Res. 175)
Throughout Mazzei’s life, he would constantly prove to be a devoted servant to the cause of Independence and this new idea of America. His contributions go beyond the Declaration.
But Mazzei’s story is just one of the many contributions of Italians to our founding. Few would recognize the names of Captain Richard Talliaferro, Captain Ferdinando Finizzi, and Captain Francesco Vigo, all playing integral roles in the American Revolution.
Disaster can strike at any time. Be prepared and know that your family is well fed.

Luis de Unzaga and the Hispanic Contributions to Our Founding
It wasn’t just Italians that contributed to the cause of independence. The contributions of Hispanics like Governor Luis de Unzaga, General Bernando Galvez, Lieutenant Jordi Mesquida, and other Hispanics all played a pivotal role in our independence.
In 1776, Patrick Henry and the Congress of Virginia sought assistance from Governor Unzaga who represented Spanish Louisiana. In his response, General Unzaga agrees to assist. More importantly, he referred to George Washington as the General of the United States of America. The reason this is important is that it would become the first time that we would be referred to as the United States of America as opposed to the 13 Colonies. He essentially named our new nation. He would go on to fulfill every request made by George Washington, and while he represented Spain, he was an American patriot.
General Galvez would also play a pivotal role in the American Revolution. Under General Galvez’s command, his victories against the British on the battlefield were essential to eliminating the British naval presence in the Gulf of Mexico.
Lieutenant Jordi Mesquida, also known as George Farragut, epitomized the spirit of independence throughout the Revolution. He was known for leadership and bravery, and his knowledge of the seas proved invaluable during the Revolution. He contributed his finances to the cause of independence. When the Revolution ended, he was broke, and so was the country, but according to Mesquida’s writings, he was “determined to assist with his life and his fortune in the struggle for American Independence.” Following in his father’s footsteps, David Farragut would go on to become the first full Admiral of the United States Navy following the Civil War.
Black Contributions to Our Founding
There were also so many Black contributions to our founding. Few Americans are aware that in the lead-up to America’s independence, a Black man, Crispus Attucks was the first casualty when he was shot and killed in the Boston Massacre. Attucks was a runaway slave from the South who worked as a sea merchant in New England. After he and several others were killed in the Boston Massacre, both Black and White Americans fought to avenge his death.
I find it amazing that these facts are rarely taught. Our education system is run by liberals, and the curriculums and textbooks are developed by liberal institutions. Yet, the same people who constantly preach about inclusion and minorities all but ignore these black contributions to our history when we should be celebrating them.
How many of us know that 5,000 black American patriots took up the cause of independence against the British? The integrated 1st Rhode Island Regiment, consisting of both Blacks and Whites, something that wouldn’t happen again for another 150 years, would earn a reputation for bravery and ferocity?
In fact, George Washington was so impressed with the determination and courage of these Black patriots that he wrote a letter to Robert Morris stating, “there is not a man living who wishes more sincerely than I do, to see a plan adopted for the abolition of it—but there is only one proper and effectual mode by which it can be accomplished, & that is by Legislative authority ” (National Archives) Now, Washington still was a slave owner, and Washington should have implored legislatures to abolish slavery. We cannot ignore that legacy. At the same time, we can’t oversimplify the issue either by using 21st-century standards to those living in the 18th century.
Most are unaware of people like James Armistead who served as an American spy and double agent. They’re clueless when they hear the name Peter Salem. A Black patriot who killed British Major John Pitcairn in the Battle of Bunker Hill. Or what about Lambert Latham who avenged the death of his American Commander, Colonel William Ledyard.
Many are unaware of Phillis Wheatley whose literary talent influenced Benjamin Franklin and George Washington. Washington was skeptical of allowing Blacks to serve in the Revolution, however, Wheatley wrote Washington praising his appointment as the commander of the Continental Army and imploring him to allow Blacks to fight for the cause of Independence. Washington wrote her back and invited her to visit him. He referred to himself as her humble servant and the two would meet in March of 1776.
Thomas Paine would publish her poem to Washington, in April 1776, in The Pennsylvania Magazine due to her poem’s central theme of freedom.
Then you have people like Lancaster Hill, Peter Bess, Brister Slenser, Prince Hall, and others, who would write a petition during the American Revolution reminding our founding fathers of the Tenets of the American Creed laid out in the Declaration of Independence. They would be pioneers pushing for equality, freedom, and justice. It would be their influence that led to Massachusetts freeing all slaves in 1783 and abolishing the institution of slavery within the state.

Closing
Unfortunately, it’s impossible to highlight every single person who played a role in our founding, and there are so many other contributions and people we should be aware of.
Sadly, we have a failed education system that does a disservice to all those who contributed. More importantly, it’s a disservice to every one of us. Reducing our founding to a bunch of old rich white men is a lie and insults the legacy of the countless others that have contributed to this great nation.
Not for nothing, but Democrats and the left routinely accuse anyone opposed to CRT of attempting to whitewash history. These are the same people who have been in charge of academia for nearly a century. It’s odd how those in charge of academia and curricula throughout the United States have chosen to eliminate all minority contributions to our founding.
But they do it for a reason. If you relegate our history to old rich white men who owned slaves, then the system they create is tainted with evil intent. If the system was created with evil intent, then it’s easy to persuade people of the necessity to change that system.
The truth of the matter, and I’m not saying my truth or your truth, there is only one truth, and the truth is our history is rich and vibrant. Our history is unique. And when you understand the full scope of our history, you will quickly realize why America is an exceptional nation.
You realize that the founders weren’t all rich white old men. You’ll realize that many of the founders did not own slaves and looked at the institution of slavery as an abomination, or as Patrick Henry said a “lamentable evil.” Many founders led or were part of anti-slavery societies.
This episode is not designed to justify our past sins. It’s not to pretend that slavery and racism didn’t exist. This episode is designed to give recognition to those who played an essential role in our founding but are rarely talked about. It’s designed to show where we started and how far we’ve come. This episode illustrates why America is an exceptional nation, and why you should never let anyone tell you differently.
Perhaps if more Americans were aware of our history, we wouldn’t see the division that exists today. Perhaps if more Americans were aware of our history, more would have an appreciation for a country that has provided so much opportunity. Perhaps if we were aware of our history, both right and left, could agree on the basics of the American political philosophy, and the core tenets of the American creed.
This Independence Day, I challenge every one of you to commit to reacquaint yourselves with our country’s vibrant history so that you can see for yourselves why America is an exceptional nation.
