Americans Last? Hurricane Helene Victims Suffer While U.S. Gives Foreigners Billions
Nearly two weeks ago, Hurricane Helene slammed the Western Coast of Florida and swept through several states, including Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, and Tennessee. Initially classified as a category 4, the hurricane was labeled a tropical storm, as it persisted into the northern bound states. Hurricanes are based on a 1 to 5 rating scale with 5 being the worst; however, this scale only accounts for the storm’s wind speed. Much of the carnage and damage from hurricanes results from flooding either from a storm surge, incessant rain, or both.
The widespread devastation of Helene – obliterating multiple communities and leaving death and ruin in its path has largely resulted from flooding. With the death toll rising above 230, Helene has become the deadliest hurricane to hit the U.S. since Hurricane Katrina nearly 20 years ago. The videos, images, and stories of fatalities and destruction are utterly heart-wrenching. There are hundreds of individuals still missing, hundreds of thousands of citizens without power, and with network outages pervasive in the region, lack of communication capabilities is making rescue and relief efforts far more difficult.
